Change-ups Not just for baseball anymore
CHANGE-UPS: NOT JUST FOR BASEBALL ANYMORE Varying sentence length in your writing sets a lot more than the tone or rhythm. It allows you to set up and emphasize points. Consider this: Many people consider New York a place theyââ¬â¢d rather visit than reside in because of its reputation as being the city that never sleeps. New York, however, is a vibrant city divided into boroughs that are all cities within themselves. Thereââ¬â¢s something for everyone in this expansive city. Meh. Itââ¬â¢s pretty bland ââ¬â not only because of its weak word choices, but because the sentences are all roughly the same length. Its dull tone becomes lulling. Most people, including the author, wouldnââ¬â¢t think twice to skip it. Letââ¬â¢s try this: New York. The city that never sleeps. Outsiders may find it difficult to image living in the middle of the bustling Big Apple. But who wouldnââ¬â¢t want to live in a city that houses beaches, historical monuments, and stellar shopping? I picked a pretty boring subject matter on purpose to illustrate just how crucial varying sentence lengths could be. Once I captured the readerââ¬â¢s attention with a short sentence, I gradually increased my sentence length to encourage the reader to keep reading. I broke up two longer sentences with a shorter one. Thereââ¬â¢s no pattern or set of rules to follow, but you should always keep in mind the basics. You donââ¬â¢t want to write only in short sentences or they lose their punch and become disruptive to the reader. Use longer sentences to establish tone and comfort, or to inform readers about something. By varying the lengths of your sentences, your audience will pick up on all the nuances that youââ¬â¢ve poured into your writing. It just makes reading more fun.

law and gender essays
law and gender essays As in the rape cases previously studied, the victims that are involved sexual harassment and sexual discrimination are subjected to an array of defenses created by their employers. All to often these rationalexplanations are under the guise of traditional gender ideologies, which attempt to explain natural sexual behavior and/or natural gender differences. As in the rape cases, the use of ridged gender roles often play a silent through critical role in shaping the courts decisions on sexual discrimination and sexual harassment cases. As will be demonstrated in the cases of Lanigan vs. Bartlett, Smith v. Eastern Airlines Co., EEOC v. Sears and Chambers v. Omaha Girls Club, a traditional gender ideology denies equal opportunity by promoting an enviorment in which females are required to behave and dress under the guise of a stereotypical gender role. As a result of these certain expectations women are limitied in the upward mobility of their careers. For example, in the case of Pr ice Waterhouse v. Hopkins, Price was discriminated against because she was deemed as too aggressive, on the other hand, in the EEOC v. Sears case, women were seen as poor risks as a result of not being aggressive enough. Secondly, in the case of Corne v. Bausch traditional rape. In short, as in the cases of rape, the ideologies of a traditional gender role, not only promote these incendents of sexual harrasment and discriminat ...

Explain the significance of legal personality. as part of your Essay
Explain the significance of legal personality. as part of your explanation you should identify why certain categories of people - Essay Example Consequently, some humans are assigned the label of limited legal personality, having limited rights in comparison with other humans. For example, law does not allow a bankrupt to become a director of a company, or a magistrate or a Member of Parliament. Also, mentally ill person has an insufficient legal capacity; consequently, he or she is disallowed to enter into a contractual relationship with any party. In the following pages, this paper is going to explain natural and artificial legal personalities and limitations on some legal personalities. Natural legal personality with beginning and end of life A natural legal personality comes with certain legal rights and obligations. Such legal rights are assigned to natural persons who qualify to have a legal capacity. The legal capacity is considerably helpful while deciding the rights and duties; depending on different social roles such as father and husband, employer and employee, voter and householder. However, law on the basis of o ccupation, age, sex, income, nationality and other relevant identifications that can be considered appropriate and relevant by the law makers, ascertain legal rights and obligations. Legal rights can only be assigned to living persons. However, some law makers may argue that an unborn foetus can have life as he or she can breathe. But, still the law has not assigned the legal status to an unborn foetus of being a legal person. Law has not defined death. There is not an exact definition that can bring an end to a natural legal personality. In history, heart beating has been used to ascertain the occurrence of death when the heart beating stops. However, the latest medicine advancement has also ensured the functioning of heart with the use of machine. Case law: R v Malcherek and Steel [1981] 1 WLR 690 Facts: A woman was stabbed by a man. She was kept alive with the help of a life-support machine, however her brain was dead. Held: Lord Chief Justice Lane, in the Court of Appeal, define d death. In the verdict, the Lord Lane remarked that death legally occurs when by the irreversible death of the brain stem, whose function is to direct the basic body function like breathing. After death-legal personality Law has not defined an unlimited type of natural legal personality. And, this limited legal personality is relevant even after the occurrence of death. The testator, a person who wrote the will, may be allowed to receive the same legal rights after his or her death in case he or she wants to distribute property according to the wishes. The court will ensure the according implementation of the terms mentioned in the will document. In this way, a possibility of dispute is considerably reduced which normally occurs in the process of property sharing. Natural legal personality: limitations Some legal personalities have limitations. And these limitations do not allow them to have the same sort of legal rights and duties given to other persons. It is their insufficient l egal capacity that disallows them to enter into a legally binding contractual relationship. Bankrupts A person who is unable to pay liabilities is declared as bankrupt by the court. As a result of such bankruptcy, the person is disallowed to become an MP, or a magistrate, or a director of a company. Mentally ill Mentally ill person has an insufficient legal capacity to understand the resultant implications of his actions. Consequently, the law does not

GLOBAL CORPORATE STRATEGY Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words
GLOBAL CORPORATE STRATEGY - Assignment Example Google and Apple introduced Android and iOS operating systems, which provided greater functionality and app support than Nokiaââ¬â¢s Symbian. As a result, Android and iOS gained larger market shares than Nokia within less than four years after they were introduced. Nokia lost its position as the leading smartphone company in the world. The alliance between Nokia and Microsoft did not achieve the intended purposes. Rather than help Nokia to regain market share, the alliance resulted in Nokia losing more market share as the Microsoft Phone OS started losing market share to Android and iOS. Ultimately, Nokia decided to sell off its devices business to Microsoft, marking the exit of Nokia from the smartphone industry. The failure of the Nokia-Microsoft alliance was based on various factors including poor leadership, organizational culture, and structure. The business environment is continually changing (Stangler, D. 2012). These constant changes influence industries and companies in various ways (Jain, Trehan & Trehan, n.d.: 16). Within the high-tech industry, the increase and emergence of new challenges such as declining growth, growing competition, and globalization have necessitated the integration and collaboration of the industry at the global level (Saksena, 2009: 1-2).In the recent past, major integrations and collaborations have been witnessed in the global smartphone industry. One such integration was involved Nokia and Microsoft Inc., which resulted in the two tech giants working together in the smartphone industry. In 2011, the two companies entered into a partnership where Nokia would produce its high end smartphones, Lumia, which would run on Microsoftââ¬â¢s Windows operating system. The partnership was motivated by Nokiaââ¬â¢s threat of losing market share after the entry of new competitors including Google Inc. and Apple Inc. The entry of these new competitors into the smartphone sector resulted in

How The Grinch Stole Christmas
How The Grinch Stole Christmas How the Grinch stole Christmas is the rhymed story, beautifully illustrated by Dr. Seuss. This rhyming story not only sounds pleasant while listening, but it also gives a good lesson to all of the readers or listeners. This poem has been written 69 years ago, but it still charms the people of every age (Gikow, ââ¬Å½ 2000). Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, was a well known poet, writer and cartoonist. He is well known for his book on children. He represents nonsense poetry, childrens literature, learning how to read and energetic cartoons. Dr. Seuss was a purist in his work and he sometimes, would spend approx. a year on a particular book (Stan, ââ¬Å½2006). Dr. Seuss is probably the most beloved author of childrens Book, of the past century. He used his power of imagination to develop outstanding kids books. He not only created the unique and fun text, but he also helped children learn through that text. His books, though written for starters, appeal to people of all ages (Philipââ¬Å½, 2004). How the Grinch Stole Christmas is the classic childrens story of all time. From teaching point of view, this story is not only perfect for the children, who are in their ready-to-read age, but it is also the perfect poem for teacher to teach with all the interests of the Starters. This story was first published as a book in 1957 by Random House. The book criticizes and is based o the Christmas commercialization. This book is also named as the Teachers Top 100 Books for children, by an online poll. This book also contains illustrations by Dr. Seuss, which add to the interest of the children. On the Top of the Mount Crumpit, which was in the north side of the Whoville, there lived a cat like thing known as the Grinch. The Grinch was green in color and used to live in a cave. His only friend was a tiny dog Max. From the mount, the Grinch could see that the people of Whoville, known as Whos, celebrating Christmas Eve and festivities. He could also hear their voices of excitement and singing. He watched those exchanging Christmas gifts and their Carol-singing. People of Whoville loved Christmas and they always wanted to enjoy this season with merriment. The Grinch was very much jealous of their happiness. He could no more endure them celebrating their favorite season. His heart was too sizes too small. So he decided to ruin their happiness (Dr. Seussââ¬Å½, 2000). So the Grinch, with his poorly dressed dog Max, went down the steep. Grinch had had his enough of Christmas business He was determined to destroy each and everything related to Christmas once and for all. So he sneaked into the houses of the Whos and stole their Christmas presents. He also stole their meals, decorations. He then started for his mount to take this loot up. He was determined to throw all these Christmas garbage. But at the very last moment, he heard a sound of Whos. This sound was coming from Whoville. All the Who were singing for the Christmas. Despite the fact that there was nothing in their houses to enjoy, they were singing together. Suddenly the Grinch felt remorse. He came back with all their stuff and joined the Christmas song. The Grinchs Attitude If we look into the character of the Grinch, we can see that he is obviously the Antagonist. Grinch was a miserable person, miserably against the happiness of others. He perfectly represents the Bad Guy of the story and typically lonely. He was not only physically alone, but more importantly he was a social outcast. He had no interaction with the people and lives in complete social isolation. He never felt any attraction or affection to the people of Whoville. He just lived above the mountain. Watching them, singing merrily and exchanging gifts with each other, always made him jealous. So he plotted against their happiness. He wanted to deprive them of the things which make them happy. He did not want to see anybody happy, as long as he is unhappy with his life. He thought when the people of Whoville would not have anything to celebrate Christmas with; they will all became sad and unhappy like him. This was the only thing that could make him happy. Dr. Seuss made his point very clear that lonely people hates facing cheering crowds Change in the Grinchs Attitude After Stealing all the things the Grinch thought that he had made the people of Whoville unhappy. But then he heard them singing like the way they always do. Only after then, a Shocking realization struck him. He realized that his plan totally failed. He had not managed to stop the celebrations of Christmas. Without any present and decorations, the people of Whoville were still celebrating the Christmas Eve with merriment. The Grinch realized that Christmas has nothing to do with the gifts and decoration. It even comes to those who have nothing in their houses. He can never steal Christmas, because Christmas is not a tangible thing. Christmas is something quite different. He can never prevent Christmas from coming. He has always misunderstood the merriment of the people of Whoville. He was in the state of utter shock. Though Grinch was a cruel and a lonely person but he still had a heart, which was innocent. He loved people inside and wanted to enjoy their gathering. But he never managed to join them by himself. He tried to steal their happiness, but he realizes that happiness was not about material thing. It can also be achieved, even if you have nothing. The situation introduced him to this new reality. It was shocking, but true. Christmas is not about presents and decorations, its all about inside merriment. The Grinch, with nothing in his possession, can even enjoy Christmas with the people of the Whoville. Dr. Seuss wants to tell us that Christmas is not about material things and commercialization. It is not about decorations and spending. Christmas is all about loving each other and spending time with your loved one. By this story he showed us all that, even the Grinch took all the things of Whos, but they still celebrated Christmas. Love, peace and harmony are the true message of the Christmas. Gifts and trees have nothing to do with the Christmas.

Culture and Ethnicity Essay
I would respond to the clientââ¬â¢s requests by doing as she has asked. This is because her requests do not make her condition worse or delay its improvement. Intake of fluid actually increases clearance of the airway in her respiratory condition. Nursing care provided to her would be adapted to fit in with her culture as long as her requests are within reasonable limits and thy do not endanger her health. (Potter, Perry and Heath, 1995) Her requests are an indication of the health traditions of her heritage. They show what kind of treatment she expects and her beliefs about health care. Culture is a set of beliefs, traditions and believes that are unique to a group of people and usually they are handed down and hardly ever change with time. These beliefs affect every aspect of life from daily living o ceremonies and include health too (Potter et al, 1995). The requests of the Chinese woman represent the beliefs she has concerning treatment of her illness. Her requests are based on the Yin-Yang Chinese concept of balance. Chinese base their food on choices on the condition of an individual, age and also the general characteristics of the individual. Some conditions are designated Yin (cold) conditions and therefore require Yang foods (hot). In this case, her respiratory condition is one of them (a Yin condition) that require a Yang food, (the warm water). (Feng, 2002). In accordance with Chinese culture, cold drinks should be avoided as they add an extra burden to the digestive system; hence her requests for warm water. (www. dhansanjivani. org/) According to the Chinese, one should eat according to the nature of their conditions. The nature of the condition is determined by observation, according to her, (the Chinese woman) the condition she has is a Yin condition and she therefore needs to eat Yang foods. Milk and bread are neutral foods and the salad is a Yin food, the foods served to her are not relevant to her condition. The belief that the digestive system should not be overburdened, may also have led her to refusing the food. Most Chinese prefer foods that are easy to digest when they are ill such as soups and the lady may have considered the turkey a burden to her digestive system. (www. dhyansanjivani. org). Love Poem
Critical Essay:4Love Poem: Linda Pastan Have you ever been in love? Do you even know what love is? Love is a feeling that at times can feel indescribable. It makes you do crazy things. Love makes you blind and no matter your circumstances with that person, if you love them you will go that extra mile for them. In this essay I will talk about the ââ¬Å"Love Poemâ⬠by Linda Pastan. In the following paragraphs I will go in depth and break down the poems to help understand the root of the poem. Love Poem was written by Linda Pastan. Linda was born in New York on May 27, 1932. Today, she is known for writing short poems on topics like family life, domesticity, motherhood, the female experience, aging, death, as well as the fragility of life and relationships. Love Poem suggests describes love in such a form that it makes you think its describing the art and craft. Thesis poem expresses the desire to write a love poem. Also the desire to express the writers love for someone. Throughout the poem Linda uses appropriate metaphors and means of expression. Just like in the poem, the action that it represents suggest to readers the kind of desire between the lovers. When I first read the poem I was confused and lost. After reading the poem a few times I realized that the theme to this poem is a ââ¬Å"nature themeâ⬠due to how she uses bits of nature to get her point across . Being that it was a ââ¬Å"nature themeâ⬠throughout the poem describe the rush of sensations which the young couple is experiencing Linda used words like headlong, creek, and leafs. In lines 2-4 ââ¬Å"a love poem as headlong as our creek after thawâ⬠ââ¬Å"ourâ⬠signifies that this couple has been together for quite some time. Later in lines 5-7 ââ¬Å"when we stand on its dangerous banks and watch it carryâ⬠she also shows how not teady her relationship with the guy is. When Linda writes ââ¬Å"dry leaf and branchâ⬠she is referring in my opinion that everything good in their relationship has been corrupted. Lines 12-14 ââ¬Å"when we see it so swollen with runoffâ⬠express that her relationship went from being a thrill to just barley communication due to all the hardship that every relationship goes through. When Linda says ââ¬Å"grab each otherâ⬠in the last line she is saying that her and her significant other need to rekindle their love and find what they saw in each other when they first began to date. The main point of this poem is trying to express how the author feels about her current relationship and what she plans on doing to fix it. In this poem I noticed a lot of heartache and suffering. This poem has such a desire to save what might not be able to be saved. The main character expresses her love for her spouse in the form of nature. She made it seem thatââ¬â¢s she wanted to forever be with him because he was her soul mate. When you love someone, you love them and theirs not much you can do at that point to forget about him/her. Whether the person is black, white, or Hispanic it wonââ¬â¢t atter cause you cant help who you fall in love with. Not too long ago was their a problems with an African American dating a white. Read Critical Essay about Skurzynskiââ¬â¢s Nethergrave So many people have died so the individuals that are alive today could be free to talk to and be with whoever they want to be with. Being in love is a powerful thing. However, many donââ¬â¢t believe in ever lasting love. Marriages donââ¬â¢t usually last very long. The individuals in the relationships always tend to give each other time and affection. These individuals get so caught up in work or school, even only paying attention to the kids and forget that their needs to be sparks still parking in order for the relationship to stay alive. Itââ¬â¢s a sad thing to see couples only trying to stay together for the ââ¬Å"kidsâ⬠. On the other hand Iââ¬â¢ve seen elderly couple who have been together for 50 plus years. For example my grandparents have been together for 65 years and still kicking. See the secret is too never give up. Iââ¬â¢m Puerto Rican and I was raised with a old fashion mentality. I was taught from an early age that marriage was a commitment between t wo individuals and these two individuals will love through thick and thin through sickness and health. You learn to find the love that was once there when it is lost. Thatââ¬â¢s how you live happily ever after with a soul mate. No matter what you must always work things out with your spouse unless being abused mentally or physically. In Lindaââ¬â¢s poem she doesnââ¬â¢t want to give and still has hope and believes that although her relationship seems unfixable it still has a chance, showing me that if you believe in something strong enough then only good can come from it. In conclusion, I enjoyed having the opportunity to analysis this poem in this way. It really gave me a chance to sit back and appreciate what many individuals such as Martin Luther King did so everyone could be treated equally. They have given us the chance to fall in love with a different kind. Another thing I was reminded when reading this poem was to never give up on the one you love. Nothing in life that was worth it was ever easy. The was Linda was able to say so much in so little amount of words was magnificent. She really made me feel her hurt and desire to try to fix something that was already potentially broken. Love Poem Critical Essay:4Love Poem: Linda Pastan Have you ever been in love?
